The Next Big Thing – Chanel Blue Satin
Get ready for the next big polish craze. Chanel Blue Satin is going to fly off the shelves, I guarantee it.
Designed by Directors of Makeup Creation Dominique Montcourtois and Heidi Morawetz, Chanel’s Spring 2008 Makeup Collection is inspired by the clean, airy colours of fresh starts and new horizons: a springtime spectrum of blues, soft pinks, and opalescent whites. From the innocence of palest robin’s egg to the drama of deep indigo, blues make a perfect companion to a flawless complexion.
The Nail Colour lineup includes Blue Satin, Rose Satin, White Satin and Azur.
A shimmering inky blue, Blue Satin, is a highly pigmented lacquer that flows evenly on the nail. I know Chanel is big on the whole “Satin” naming thing but if it were up to me, I’d name this one Blue Velvet because that’s what it reminds me of in the bottle, a snuggly blue velveteen blanket. On the nail this blackened navy is very dark and only shows it’s true shimmering brilliance when well lit but that’s true of most dark polishes. And in a true moment of serendipity I looked out my window to see sun, actual sun, so I went a little overboard on the swatch pics for you.Now you know that I am the last person to tell you to run out and plunk down more than $10 on a polish but I can honestly say that, for me, this one is worth it. But please don’t buy it just to have it. If you’re not a lover of blue polishes, this one won’t magically change that. And for all you bargain shoppers, I’m going to work up some comparisons.
The official Chanel release is scheduled for January 2008 but I would get on a waiting list now. As of today you can pre-order Blue Satin on the Neiman Marcus website with an anticipated ship date of December 14th.
So who’s giving in to this one? Who’s abstaining? Will anyone be checking out the other shades?
Your mani looks great. You did a fabulous job. Really pretty
That is pretty!
I LOVE navy blue nail polish, and this shade is perfect. I think I want to jump on that waiting list!
Ooh that’s SO pretty! I’m not normally a navy polish kinda gal, but that Chanel color is very tempting…
really pretty! I’m definitely pre-ordering this one.
What topcoat did you use for this manicure?
Thanks everyone!
Anon – I didn’t use a topcoat. That’s all Chanel.
I love navy polish (even though at 38 I should probably get over myself about that) BUT I am always disappointed that Chanel polishes don’t last past 1-2 days on me. Anything you do to extend Chanel’s durability???????
I don’t expect them to be like OPI but more than 2 days doesn’t seem like too much to ask! :]
I use OPI Nail Envy base coat and Sally Hansen’s Acrylic Topcoat has proven best on me (I’ve tried Seche Vete’s, OPIs and Essie’s but none work as well as Hansen Acrylic on my nails). Thanks! Molly
I have been waiting with baited breath for this shade to come out. It looks so fabulous in your pictures, but I am disappointed to see that it is sparkly, and not a creme blue, as I originally thought it would be.
Why is it so hard to find a creme blue polish in a navy or a cobalt or a royal?? All of the shades this year are metalic, sparkly, shimmery, or they are an unflattering shade of blue (on me). Any ideas for me? Please help.
While Blue Satin is pretty, it’s just too close to black for me…I prefer a BLUE blue, like NYC’s Skin Tight Denim Creme. It’s like $1 but lasts longer than OPI for me (10 days with no chips-during which I traveled with 3 large pieces of luggage across the country and back). To anonymous at 9:08 PM, try this one out!
I have a deep blue creme by Ruby and Millie. It’s really lovely and it’s actually the only one I’ve ever come across in stores. That’s in the UK though, and I don’t know where you’re located.
This is gorgeous. But I already love OPI Russian Navy . . . do I really need both? Oh, decisions!
P.S. Loooove your blog!
I’m not going to get it, I have Opi “light my sapphire,” and i just ordered russian navy and ink. I’m sick of shades that look black to everyone else, so I’m hoping those two will actually be blue, but dark at the same time.
I wish I discovered your blog before I started buying my dark colors, because your pictures and comparisons are truly a must-have for polish lovers.
I’m sorry but it is just boring to me, navy is navy is navy
Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t that look just like Wet N Wild Denim Chrome?
I feel incredibly trendy now.
Lovely. I’ll be buying this one (but I hope I’ll be able to find it duty-free in January). Gablesgirl – I have found that the best thing for stopping Chanel polishes chipping is a base of CND Stickey and a topcoat of Seche Vite. It’ll keep mine rock-solid for about five days.
I’m abstaining. I have Zoya Indigo and that’s enough dark blue polish for me. Also, I’m not a big blue polish fan.
I won’t be getting this one. It’s pretty, but seriously, how much blue nail polish does anyone need? I have OPI Russian Navy and the two darker ones from the Hollywood collection, and Hard Knock life from Vinyl Deborah Lippman; it’s a pretty blue creme. (Which I love, but I HATE those caps! I can barely apply it.)
I absolutely LOVE blue nail polish and have been collecting it for years – so this trend is great for me! However, as another poster commented, this looks amazingly like WnW Demin Chrome, which I already have 2 bottles of. Although I’m an OPI fanatic and probably pay more for np than I should, I absolutely REFUSE to pay $19 a bottle because it says Chanel. I’ll use and love my WnW (after all, they were there first) and be happy with it.
It’s gorgeous but I must say it’s almost identical to my 1 dollar wet n’ wild nail colour I’ve been using since this past spring when I couldn’t find a navy colour.
This shade looks beautiful! I would love to see it side by side with OPI’s Light My Sapphire and Russian Navy. I bet that they all are very similar to eachother.
I heart OPI!!!
sealed, i think opi’s ink will get that blue you are looking for. it’s an extremely ROYAL blue (almost purplely on me).
I think most “women” will pass on the dark blue polish unless they have fabulous nails and hands because the darker colors really call atention to your hands! Although my teenage daughter would probably die for it. I’d love to see some tips on applying dark polish and making it last longer than a day or two!
Blue Satin looks gorgeous! Such a lovely navy blue.
I have succumbed to blue satin =) Then again I’m addicted to navy (blue satin will make #23 in my navy collex) so maybe that’s why. I’m excited since it will be my first Chanel polish! Anyways, for those who said they wanted a navy that looked navy, if you don’t mind a bit of shimmer DS Fantasy is perfect. The holo seems almost mono-chromatic, so it’s not quite as blingy and definitely worth checking out.
I have the gelly blue from lippmann collection and OPI Ink and Russian Navy. I’ll skip this one because it just sort of looks like those to me.
anonymous: if you are looking for a creme blue, try Clarins “Blue Abysee”(ocean#209) I was hoping chanel will launch a creamy blue but I guess not!…
You know, I barely ever colored my nails before I found this blog, and nowadays the minute a coat of polish goes off another goes on. You’ve really made nail polish addicting for me.
I’m not a big fan of navys on nails but I’m interested to see what some of the other colors from the Chanel collection look like. It’d be awesome if you could swatch some of those for us to see. Your swatches are awesome and just invaluable in helping me choose my polishes.
hmmm, i put myseld on the waiting list, but it kinda looks like navy venom to me, which i have 2 of, and i have wnw denim chrome too, but i think the chanel might be darker than the denim cchrome. im not sure if i will get.
I preordered it based on your manicure pics :). It’s gorgeous.
I think I read somewhere that Nars Midnight Express is a creme navy, but don’t quote me on that.
Is it just me or is that color a near-match for the (season’s ago) Chanel Ciel de Nuit? Although, to be fair, I think that one had white bits of glitter, not navy. Still – it seems a bit rip-offy. Just bring back Ciel de Nuit
I LOVE dark nails, so I recently bought OPI’s “Russian Navy” which is quite similar to Chanel’s Blue Satin. I love it — it looks fresh and slightly edgy, but is different from the standard punky black. I highly recommend OPI’s “Russian Navy” if you like these pictures! By the way, your manicure is amazing. I wish I could do my nails as well as that!
Super hot! Can’t wait for the *entire* color line!
ahhh! where do u pre-order? the link just takes me to the nail color page. maybe im blind but i cant see where it says preorder anywhere.
This shade looks almost identical to a Revlon nail polish I bought a few months ago (which I fell in love with as well). While I’m sure Chanel’s will be a much bigger success, those of you looking for the same effect for less should go check out Revlon Dark Pleasures Nail Lacquer in the shade Midnight Affair.
hmhmhm, it looks too similar with zoya indigo to me, with the flecks. but if i’m gonna buy a chanel, this is gonna be it. unless…pleasepleaseplease swatch azure for us deary….
I hate to break it to you all but this color is identical to OPI’s Russian Navy. I have both and the Chanel is going back.
I’m sorry but I must politely disagree. I have swatched Russian Navy and Blue Satin side by side and they are not identical.
Yep, I agree. Both Blue Satin and Russian Navy are different. OPI Russian Navy has more of a pink-ish tone to it, and Blue Satin does not.
I got this polish a few days ago and I love it!
Has someone tried out Azure?
Anonymous, I tried out Azure and I LOVE it. It’s a must. It also looks INCREDIBLE layered over Blue Satin. Gives the color more depth and sparkle. But it’s gorgeous as a light polish. Check it out at redneckfashionslave.blogspot.com.
I bought Chanel Blue Satin and to me it looks identical to Chanel Black Satin. BLUE SATIN has no sparkle. It does NOT look blue on my fingers the way it looks so blue online. I am disappointed I wasted money on this. The shade looked so pretty online and I feel like I bought another black nail polish. That being said, OPI Russian Navy is DIFFERENT than Chanel Blue Satin. If you want a real blue try Essie Aruba Blue.
Just to let everyone know if anyone lives in Pa..the Nordstrom in KOP has it! O and you can also order it from Nordstrom’s website. So not all places are sold out. This is a very fabulous color. I have a few blue polishes and this one is my fav. Make sure you don’t put it on to thick, it will look more black than blue. Thin coats!! Thank you !!!
I am a Chanel Beauty Analyst and I can tell you that the “Blue Satin” is at stores now. Let me give you a tip, put on one coat of the Blue Satin and one coat of “Azur”, talk about sparkle. Yes, it is more expensive, but Chanel’s nail polish stays on longer with no chipping. Thanks for the great review!
I prefer Russian Navy. It’s cheaper and it actually looks blue on the nail. Your mani looks fabulous!
I’m going for OPI DS Fantacy and the new spring 2008 YGGTB. I’m hoping they won’t look like black nail polish on me, that they will look like a true blue. We shall see, I’m ordering today!
For those of you who want a shade that is a bit more cobalt , try OPI Yoga to Get It Blue.
I polished one nail with Russian Navy and another with YogaToGetIt Blue and although they are close, the RN is darker with more purple hue and the YTGIB is definitely bluer but a rich cobalt blue. Both are very lovely. The Russian Navy is closer in hue to the Chanel Blue Satin.
this may be a silly question for a true nail fanatic… but how many coats is ‘right’ for blue satin?
ive done two, first attempt.. and it seems to have lost its lustre…
Hello, may I ask what’s the difference between Yoga-ta Get This Blue and Russian Navy? and which one is more similar to Blue Satin from Chanel? If you suggest other is ok
Thanks in advance
I painted one nail with Chanel Blue Satin and another with Sally Hansen Navy Baby and the colors are almost exactly the same!
another dark blue shade that may be worth trying is Sephora By OPI’s Opening night. it’s really dark and it shines brilliantly. also, doesn’t chip! i love it. and it’s a pretty good price at $9.
